Snowmen and Hermit Crabs

I was so excited a couple of weeks ago when our snow was finally sticky enough to build snowmen. We have lived here for 2 and a half years and this is the very first time our snow has been sticky. I'm not sure if it is because we don't get a ton of sun in the backyard, but I was so excited the day I discovered it. We couldn't build just one.

It's a little bit old but when I was going through my pictures I remembered our good ol friends, the Hermit Crabs. We were camping last summer and on a rainy day went to West Edmonton Mall where we found these pets. The guy at the kiosk was telling us how these little crabs are so people friendly and easy to take care of. He said they were very social. They were supposed to recognize their owner as soon as they were held and come out of their shell. At first I thought it was so sweet. Their shells are painted in bright fun colors, they love their owners, and are easy to take care of. What more could I ask for in a pet for my kids? So we bought Asher, Lexi and Hunter each one. Well, they were in love with their little crabs.

Fast forward 2 weeks and Hunter's crab keeps biting him, Lexi's would rarely come out of it's shell so she felt like it didn't love her, and Asher's got lost in the house. That's right. In the house. A crab just walking around. I just assumed after 2 days of not finding it that it would be dead. About a week later my sister was over and all of a sudden looked over at the wall in my living room and started freaking out at what was crawling on the floor. Asher's crab. Lovely. Still alive, and has been free in my living room for a week. Gross. So I'm sad to say, that none of the crabs lasted much longer. Erik sent them all to Heaven. I just couldn't take it any more. At least I gave the pet thing a good shot, right?

  2. Maybe next time try a not so creepy pet :) haha, at least you didn't find out it was still alive by stepping on it or finding it in the bottom of a boot!!! :)

  3. I don't know if killing them off counts as a good shot! Animals are amazing ... my turtle got out once and lived 2 whole weeks around the house with no water or food. I call him my little miracle!

  4. Ha ha! I love the crab story-I would never put you and crabs together (think Candace's house in Vancouver?), so for you, that was a definite good shot! :) And love the snowmen. We made one after you told me about yours and I thought it was so good-but Jesse was just disappointed that it didn't quite look like Frosty. Love the post, keep them coming!!

  5. Cute, cute, cute!
I've been wanting to call you and give you a play-by-play of an un-invited guest that lived in our house for 3 weeks. He even invited himself over Christmas. I practiced my stalking technique at all hours of the night ... feeling violated by our: Christmas Mouse.
I think your crab story is much more creative. This is not the country I would expect to find a crab hangin' in the corner of the house. Which is what makes it even more funny.

  9. I'm cracking up! How did those little sweet crabs ascend into Heaven, anyway? Drowning? Watery Grave Buriel, aka Toileta? Poisoning? I can't really think of a good way to 'put down' a crab. It makes me laugh to think about. :)

  10. Hello!! I don't know if you will remember me (Sister Chilton), but I think you need to start blogging again!! haha- I love your little family so so much!
I was sitting in relief society the other day and we were talking about how to teach our children the gospel and I got thinking about your amazing family. I raised my hand and shared the time you invited my companion and I over for FHE and you taught the most adorable lesson and then had them get up and bear their testimonies- that was such a great example to me and I want you to know that! I think you are the greatest!
